Milan, July 23 (Adnkronos) – The journey to the absolute World Fencing Championships Milan 2023 has begun. This afternoon at the Cairo international stadium complex, the flag of the Fie, the International Fencing Federation, was handed over to the Italian delegation. The handover from Egypt to Italy was held during an official ceremony on the last day of the 2022 World Championships, which took place these days in Cairo. Receiving the flag were Italian Fencing Federation president Paolo Azzi, Italy’s ambassador to Egypt Michele Quaroni, Milan 2023 organizing committee president Marco Fichera, and Coni Lombardy president Marco Riva. The event returns to Italy 12 years after the 2011 Catania edition: it will be hosted for the first time in Milan, in July 2023, the competitions will be held at the Allianz Cloud.
The bid was submitted in September 2021 and the World Cup was awarded to our city last November in Lausanne: Milan came out on top with 84 preferences over the 57 obtained by Tashkent (Uzbekistan). “We are very proud that it is Milan, an international reference point for fencing and a city with a long and consolidated tradition in this discipline, that will host the 2023 Absolute World Championships,” comments Councillor for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policies, Martina Riva. “With the delivery of the Fie flag, the countdown to the most important fencing event in the world, after the Olympics, officially begins. “The candidacy of our city -she adds- immediately proved to be of value: the merit of a detailed and convincing proposal, attentive to the environmental sustainability of the event, which the Municipality of Milan has decisively supported together with the other institutions.
The Fencing World Championships will be an important test-bed both for the competing athletes, because Milan 2023 will be crucial for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and for our city, which, in addition to ensuring that fencers and supporters from all over the world will be welcomed and provided with adequate services in line with their interests, will be able to seize the opportunity to consolidate its role as the international ‘capital of sport,’ also in view of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games. Milan has great organizational competence and efficiency, a sense of hospitality and a high-level cultural offer: decisive requisites to make the World Fencing Championships a quality event and to aspire to host such highly attractive events in the future as well.”
